St Peter's Brafferton Church of England VA Primary School

Aspiring, believing and achieving together

Our Principles for Teaching and Learning

Learning Principles at St Peter's

Our school is a warm, caring and inclusive place where everyone feels valued and can grow in confidence and faith. Everything we do, learn and say is supported by our Christian Values of Community, Compassion, Truth, Trust, Friendship and Endurance.

Our principles for learning at St Peter’s Brafferton:

· Everyone feels safe and happy in school and follows our clear rules.

· Learning is engaging, exciting and rigorous. Activities are planned and taught based on a problem-solving, real-life approach. Maximum use is made of lesson time.

· Children are resilient, independent learners. They act on adults’ feedback effectively to edit and improve their work. They are happy to accept and seek out challenge, and keen to improve their own and others’ learning.

· Our ‘Keep up not catch up’ culture means that no child falls behind. We know exactly how each child is doing and take steps immediately to support children who need it.

· We have open and mutually supportive relationships with parents. We communicate effectively with parents about their child’s progress and how to help them improve.

· We have very high expectations of learning, behaviour, progress and attainment.

· Everyone takes pride in our work and in our school.

At St Peter’s Brafferton CE (VA) Primary School, we believe that learning is most memorable for pupils when it is planned in a cross curricular way, enabling children to make meaningful links throughout their learning. We offer a creative curriculum that is balanced and knowledge based, promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, social, intellectual and physical development of all pupils.  It provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that they need to be educated citizens in today’s modern society.

Our curriculum at St Peter’s Brafferton CE (VA) Primary School is as creative as possible and our emphasis on education through the arts, particularly through our music education, helps stimulate creativity and achievement.  We want all of our children to move confidently and successfully through their education and we believe in providing the best quality teaching and learning for all our pupils.  We all work together to ensure that our curriculum engages all learners and provides opportunities for deeper learning. We are always exploring new ways to prepare our children to function in the world beyond the classroom.

Wherever possible, we encourage children to have input into planning the direction of their learning. We plan topics that have rich content using stimuli such as paintings, artefacts and places of interest as a starting point for further investigation and to develop questioning skills. Our aim is for the pupils to investigate rich and challenging issues and topics, often in the context of real world problems. We always bring learning to life for our pupils by linking trips and visits to our topics.  We ensure our lessons include challenge for all pupils, opportunities for children to learn through hands on experiences and lots of feedback from adults and peers.

The curriculum is continually reviewed and enhanced to ensure that it is flexible and responsive to the children’s needs. This ensures there is a relevant context for learning. The blend of discrete subjects, such as literacy and mathematics, enriched by a plethora of other experiences, provides a vibrant mix that supports pupils’ learning.  We have high expectations of both staff and pupils and always endeavour to achieve outstanding outcomes.
